Tonsils: |
|
What are
tonsils?
The tonsils
are two glands on either side at the back of
the throat. They are located at the top of
the throat and come in contact with germs
when they are breathed in or about to be
swallowed. They are part of the body's
system to fight the germs that cause
infection. Tonsils are most important in
helping to fight infection during the first
few years of life. After children are about
three years old, tonsils don't help fight
infection.

Tonsils can become
infected and may also be a source of infection.
This can cause sore throats as well as trouble
breathing and swallowing, and sleep disturbance.
Infected tonsils may be treated with antibiotics.
However, if they become infected again and again
or cause difficulty in breathing, the best
treatment may be to remove them. Your doctor will
advise you if this is recommended for your child.
How can we
prepare our child for the procedure?
Your child
needs to be prepared too, because surprises
can frighten children. We've found that
children who know what to expect are better
able to deal with coming to the hospital.
They need honest explanations in simple
terms they can understand. Exactly what you
tell your child will, of course, depend on
his or her age and understanding, but we can
help you find the right words and
explanations.
